Immaculate Conception

December 8

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the belief in the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception. Many families will attend their local church followed by a family meal. There are no parades or public events on this day.

Who celebrates?

People of the Christian faith around the world, particularly people of the Catholic faith.

How do people celebrate?

People attend their local church followed by a family meal.

What should I know?

  • The Catholic Church states about 1 in 12 people in the UK are Catholic
  • The immaculate conception is also celebrated by Orthodox Christian Faiths
  • Many people mistake December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (of Mary) with the Annunciation, the Feast of the (virginal) conception of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.

How can I support others?

  • Ask people about their faith and whether they’d be willing to share what it means to them
  • Recognise that different Christian faiths for example Orthodox Christians, may celebrate in different ways
  • Talk to your team about the religious representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and if it’s representative of your area.
