Easter

Easter is the most sacred time of year for the Orthodox, Catholic and Christian Churches. It is a festival commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and consists of Maundy Thursday which commemorates the Washing of the Feet and the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, Good Friday is the day in the calendar when Christians remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and Easter Sunday recognises the resurrection of Jesus Christ 3 days after his crucifixion.

Who celebrates?

Easter is celebrated by Christian, Catholic and Orthodox churches around the world with different traditions and emphasis locally.

How do people celebrate?

• Maundy Thursday is recognised by religious services
• Good Friday is a solemn day of mourning when believers reflect on the meaning of Christ’s crucifixion
• Easter Sunday is the end of Lent fasting for many and is often celebrated with easter egg hunts and eating hot cross buns.

What should I know?

• In the 2011 census 33.2 million people identified as Christian
• Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in the UK

How can I support others?

• Recognise that people of different religions may not be celebrating
• Be sensitive to the cultural differences around Easter; some cultures may focus on commemorating and others more on celebrating such as with Easter egg hunts
• Ask your people about their faith and whether they’d be willing to share what it means to them
• Familiarise yourself with the diversity of religion in your area and how representative your organisation is of the community you serve.
