World Bipolar Day

March 30

World Bipolar Day is on the 30th of March to recognise the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after his death. It aims to promote awareness and understanding of bipolar disorder.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global awareness day!

How do people celebrate?

  • One way to celebrate is by wearing a black ribbon with white stripes. The contrasting colours represent the two extremes of the disorder
  • Raise awareness by discussing what bipolar disorder is and being open about any experiences.

What should I know?

  • Bipolar disorder affects a persons mood. It is most commonly seen as drastic mood swings from extreme highs to extreme lows. It is also associated with depression and mania.
  • Over 1 million people in the UK are affected by bipolar disorder and one in five with the disorder cause themselves harm or commit suicide.

How can I support others?

  • Ensure you’re taking care of your own mental health first
  • Use our additional resources to education yourself on bipolar disorder
  • Take the opportunity to make sure your people know the resources available to support them
  • Recognise when someone may need professional support.
