Transgender Day of Visibility

Transgender Day of Visibility aims to recognise the experience, struggles and discrimination of transgender people. It also aims to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the transgender community.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global awareness day!

How do people celebrate?

• There is no specific way to celebrate – so be creative! But make sure that the voices of transgender people are being heard
• Start conversations and listen – ask people to open up about their experience if they feel comfortable so that you learn to support transgender people the way they need.

What should I know?

• Transgender is when a person’s gender is different to the one that they were assigned at birth. People generally transition because they do not identify with the assigned gender at birth
• It is estimated that in the UK the transgender population is between 200,000 and 500,000
• A Stonewall survey showed that 41% of trans men and women had experienced hate crimes due to being transgender and 67% reported avoid discussing their experience due to fear of negative reactions
• The transgender flag is made up of blue, pink and white stripes.

How can I support others?

• Join your local Pride Parade and show your support!
• Educate yourself on Transgender challenges using the additional resources
• Think about any challenges specific to your cause for the transgender community and whether your organisation is meeting their needs
• Talk to your team about transgender representation among your volunteer, employee and user population and what you’re doing to do to ensure inclusion.
