Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20

All over the world people use this day to remember and commemorate transgender people who have faced discrimination. Whilst originally created to remember those who lost their lives, it has now expanded to celebrate historic trans figures and call for greater rights and inclusion worldwide.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a national awareness day.

How do people celebrate?

  • This is a day of remembrance and awareness rather than celebration and people around the world remember those they have lost due to transphobia
  • People may also hold vigils to commemorate the lives that have been lost.

What should I know?

  • Trans is an umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth
  • There are between 200,000-500,000 trans people in the UK
  • 2 in 5 trans people have been attacked or threatened in the last year
  • Almost half of the trans people in the UK have attempted suicide.

How can I support others?

  • Educate yourself on trans issues using the additional resources
  • Be sensitive of anyone who may have experienced the loss of a trans person or may have been subject to trans related discrimination
  • Talk to your team about the trans representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and what you’re doing to ensure trans inclusion.
