Pesach (Passover)

April 22 - April 30

Passover or Pesach remembers the time the Jewish people left slavery behind them when they were led out of Egypt by Moses 3,000 years ago. It is one of the most important dates in the Jewish calendar.

Who celebrates?

Jewish people around the world.

How do people celebrate?

  • It is celebrated for 7-8 days by removing all leavened foods (risen products) to remember the Jews who did not have time to let their bread rise when they left Egypt
  • The eve before Passover begins with a service called Seder over a meal with family and friends
  • Traditionally matzos are eaten which is unrisen bread.

What should I know?

  • Jewish people who don’t celebrate other religious holidays may celebrate Passover
  • Passover is the oldest continuously celebrated Jewish festival
  • Many foods will be made kosher for Passover by removing any risen grains. This includes many alcohols and drinks as well as foods
  • In the 2011 census 271,259 people identified as Jewish in the UK.

How can I support others?

  • Be aware that Jewish colleagues and clients may take holiday around Pesach if it is not a national holiday in their country
  • Ask people if they or their families will be celebrating
  • Encourage celebrations internally and externally
  • Talk to your team about the religious representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and if it’s representative of your area.
