Orthodox Christmas Day

January 7

Orthodox Christmas day is similar to the 25th December but celebrated on the 7th January. This is because they use the Julian calendar, while Western churches use the Gregorian calendar.

Who celebrates?

The majority of Orthodox Christian churches celebrate Christmas on 7th January.

How do people celebrate?

It is celebrated with many of the traditions of the 25th December like trees, wreaths and gifts. But is also a time of reflection and healing for many countries.

What should I know?

  • 7% Christians in the 2011 census identified as Orthodox
  • The Orthodox Churches are united in faith and by a common approach to theology, tradition, and worship. They draw on elements of Greek, Middle-Eastern, Russian and Slav culture
  • Each Church has its own geographical (rather than a national) title that usually reflects the cultural traditions of its believers

How can I support others?

  • Wish people a happy Christmas and ask them how they’re celebrating!
  • Be aware that colleagues celebrating Orthodox Christmas may take holiday
  • Ask people who are celebrating Orthodox Christmas what their traditions are
  • Talk to your team about the Orthodox representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and if it’s representative of your area.
