Epiphany/3 Kings Day

January 6

Epiphany is a Christian feast day that celebrates the the arrival of 3 Kings bringing gifts to the birth of Jesus. It is observed by both Eastern and Western Churches with the Western church recognising the birth of Jesus and the Eastern recognising the baptism of Jesus.

Who celebrates?

Epiphany is celebrated by many Eastern and Western Churches but for Spain it is central to festive celebrations.

How do people celebrate?

  • Celebrations vary across the Eastern and Western Churches but often include a family feast
  • In the UK it’s traditional to take your Christmas tree down

What should I know?

  • The date of Epiphany also happens around the time for Twelfth Night too. Traditionally, Twelfth Night marks the end of Christmas – 12 nights after Christmas
  • Epiphany is mainly celebrated by Catholics and Orthodox Christians and is an important festival in Spain and South America

How can I support others?

  • Be aware that colleagues celebrating Epiphany may take holiday at this time
  • Ask people who are celebrating what their traditions are
  • Talk to your team about the religious representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and if it’s representative of your area
