International Pronouns day

October 16

International Pronouns Day aims to educate on personal pronoun preferences and normalise the use of pronouns that individual’s choose themselves. Using people’s chosen pronouns is basic to human dignity.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global awareness day!

How do people celebrate?

People and organisations celebrate by organising events and workshops to educate people around gender diversity and pronoun preferences.

What should I know?

  • This day refers to third person personal pronouns, which are used to describe a person when you are talking about them
  • Non-binary describes people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with either man or women
  • This means they may not identify with the pronoun that society assigns them
  • Transgender people are sometimes harassed and treated with hostility, which is often evidenced by intentional or repeated use of the wrong pronouns.

How can I support others?

  • Don’t assume people’s pronouns. Ask them what pronouns they go by
  • Educate yourself on gender non-binary and pronouns using the additional resources
  • Talk to your team about the trans and non gender non-binary representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and what you’re doing to do to ensure inclusion.
