All Saint’s Day

All Saint’s Day is a Christian celebration to honour all of the Saints throughout history. Although many Saints have dedicated dates to honour them, this day celebrates those who have attained heaven, but their sainthood is only known to god.

Who celebrates?

It is celebrated by the Catholic, Anglican Communion, Methodist, Reformed and Lutheran and Philippine, Orthodox Churches.

How do people celebrate?

Different churches celebrate in different ways but many will hold services or masses and visit the graves of relatives sand loved ones to lay flowers and light candles.

What should I know?

  • It is also known as All Hallows’ day or Hallowmas
  • The date of All Saint’s Day may vary in the orthodox churches as it is observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost
  • Different churches have different reasons for celebrating the day
  • It is the origin of the wester traditions surrounding Halloween.

How can I support others?

  • Ask people if they or their families will be celebrating All Saint’s Day
  • Do not assume that they will be celebrating just because they come from a country that has an orthodox religion
