Ascension of Mary is the celebration of the ascension of Virgin Mary to Heaven. It is often seen as a symbol of the promise made by Jesus to all enduring Christians.

How do people celebrate?

• Ceremonies are held in Catholic and Orthodox Churches
• It is also a major feast day and following colourful, street processions and fireworks.

What should I know?

• The Assumption of Mary is controversial in the Protestant faith as it is not specified in the Bible
• People usually have to wait until the end of time before resurrection but Mary was able to ascend as she was not tainted by original sin
• In the 2011 census 9.6% of the UK identified as Catholic
• Orthodox Churches observe the Julian calendar and will celebrate on approximately 2 weeks later that the Catholic Church.

• Be aware that for some Christians the day may be controversial
• Ask people about their faith and whether they’d be willing to share what it means to them
