Nelson Mandela Day

July 18

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and philanthropist. He served as the first Black President of South Africa from 1994-1999. The day was inspired by his call for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global celebration.

How do people celebrate?

People and organisations celebrate by recognising the contributions Nelson Mandela made but also the divides that still exist across the UK today.

What should I know?

  • Mandela received the Nobel Peace Price in 1993 for his work in dismantling Apartheid (racial segregation) in South Africa
  • He imprisoned for 27 years for treason but throughout that time continued to be a symbol of peace and civil rights.

How can I support others?

  • Use the additional resources sources to find out more about the UK’s civil rights movement
  • Take the opportunity to talk about the discrimination that still exists in UK society and whether you can identify any exclusion in your service or team
  • Discuss the ethnic diversity of your volunteers with your team and what more can be done to increase diversity in your area.
