International Day of Charity

September 5

The United Nations created this day to focus on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. Charities have the potential to transform lives by providing the framework for people all over the world to contribute and support an array of causes.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global awareness day!

How do people celebrate?

The day is used to raise awareness of charity activists and to encourage donations and volunteering.

What should I know?

  • The 5th September was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta
  • There are about 169,000 charities in the UK
  • Charities in the UK employ 827,000 people and contribute £12b to the economy.

How can I support others?

  • Use the additional resources to learn about the contribution of charities in the UK
  • Take the opportunity to connect with people from other charities and how your causes can help each other
  • Talk to your team about the diversity of your charity’s reach and what you can do to ensure you are serving the diversity of people who need you.
