Eid al Fitr – End of Ramadan

April 9

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. It’s one of the two major holidays in the Islamic year. The evening before is known as Laylat al Kadr or Night of Power and honours the night that the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Who celebrates?

Muslims around the world.

How do people celebrate?

  • It is celebrated with prayer and thanksgiving to God, as well as feasting and giving to charitable causes.
  • Eid is celebrated with feasts, music and community events across the Islamic world.

What should I know?

  • Different cultures have different names for the celebration for example people from West Africa call it Korite and people from Indonesia may call it Labaran.
  • Eid al Fitr is all about good will, and it’s a time when people come together with joy and community spirit
  • It is not to be confused with Eid al Adha which is a separate Muslim celebration.

How can I support others?

  • Ask people if they or their families will be celebrating – if they are, you can wish them ‘Eid Mubarak’ which means ‘blessed Eid’
  • Do not assume if someone’s family is Muslim that they will be celebrating
  • Do not schedule major internal or external events on these days
  • Talk to your team about the religious representation among your volunteer, employee and service user population and if it’s representative of your area.
