Dyslexia Awareness Week

October 2 - October 8

This week aims to raise awareness of dyslexia, through talks, information campaigns and story sharing around the world. It focuses not just on the challenges for people with dyslexia but also the more positive attributes of dyslexia.

Who celebrates?

Everyone – it’s a global awareness week!

How do people celebrate?

People and organisations share stories of experiences of dyslexia, how to support and empower people with dyslexia and organisational resources available.

What should I know?

  • Dyslexia affects approximately 1 in 10 people in the UK and is the most common disability
  • Dyslexia is a learning difficulty relating to interpreting words and letters but not related to intelligence
  • Everyone who has dyslexia is different, so it’s important to ask each person what works for them.

How can I support others?

  • Talk to your team about dyslexia and ask if anyone would like to share their experience
  • Ensure you’re communicating accessibly by:
  • Have your virtual or face to face meetings in a quiet place without background noise
  • Making any written communication, brief, structured and use colour where possible (try using dark colours on light non-white backgrounds)
  • Offer alternative ways of communicating, such as voice notes or using accessibility functions on your virtual platforms
  • Use images and diagrams to replace or support text in presentations.
