International Human Solidarity Day
December 20, 2024
International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD) is a day to celebrate unity in our diversity, raise awareness on public solidarity and remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements. A key part of the day is to encourage discussion and action for the eradication of poverty. IHSD views the solidarity between people as a way to unity ‘to maintain international peace and security’.
Who celebrates?
Everyone – it’s an international awareness day!
How do people celebrate?
- People and organisations celebrate by raising awareness about human solidarity and those that are affected around the world by poverty
- Offer support to other organisations that help those facing poverty.
What should I know?
- Each year has a different theme – this year’s theme will be available via this page.
- It is estimated that in 2021 up to 14.million people in the UK lived in poverty, that is 1 in every 5 people
- Despite one-person households being more at risk of poverty, more than 30% of couple households are in poverty.
How can I support others?
- Use the additional resources to educate yourself on the purpose of IDHS and to further understand how support the eradication of poverty
- Discuss issues surrounding poverty with your team and explore if there is anything your organisation can do to support those facing poverty
- Be understanding that conversations about poverty may be difficult for some people.
